The Secret Garden

"She walked quickly in and shut the door behind her. At last she was inside the secret garden! It was the loveliest, most exciting place she had ever seen. There were old rose trees everywhere, and the walls were covered with climbing roses." (p. 25)



     Did you have a secret place where you play with your friends when you were a child? In my case, I had the spot near my house or at school and I used to play with my friends there every day when I was an elementary school student.

     "The secret garden" is a key place in this book. The main character is Mary who is born in India. When she was ten years old, she moved to her uncle's house situated in Yorkshire because her parents passed away due to a disease. Although she is a very selfish, disagreeable, bad tempered little girl at first, her personality gradually changes kindly thanks to a new servant called Martha, Robin which is a bird, or Dickon who is a kind boy. In addition, the nature around her new house makes her soft. One day, she hears that there is a secret garden around the house but doors are closed and the key of it is buried ten years ago. However, when she is walking, she finds the key by chance and she can open the secret garden's door. This is the beginning of a miracle story for her and a boy...

     This is in the Oxford Bookworms series. The original work of this book is written by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I think the story is very heartwarming episode and it tells us the importance of connection with others. It is a little long  but it should make you feel warm. I recommend you read this book!

    A handmade house made of cardboard boxes was my secret place during my childhood. I often would bring it to a yard and hide from my parents with my little sister.
    The Secret Garden's one is much better than mine in that it welcomed her with other friends. Although I read it last year, the content almost disappeared from my brain, so I will try again!!

      I read the book named "Persuasion" written by Jane Austen. It is a love story but mixing with regret or despair feelings. Two main characters appear in the book and their name is Anne Eliot and William Wentworth. They love each other and also want to get married, but the marriage cannot come true. Wentworth has no enough money at that time, so Anne's family disagree with their marriage. Anne follows the opinions of those around her and she takes him leave.      Anne still love Wentworth and she regrets her decision of those days strongly although the time passes. However, they meet again after many years and his condition is different than before. He rises in life and have a lot of money. When they have a reunion, their relation is very awkward and she feels that I cannot go back to the good old days with him.      Throughout the story, I thought that it is very hard for us that we cannot get married with the person we really love. 9. The mill on the floss

     I read the book called "Mill on the floss". This work is written by George Eliot, one of a famous writer all over the world. The main character of this book is Maggie who is a very beautiful and intelligent girl. Tom who is Maggie's brother is also an important character in the story.      Throughout the story, Maggie is loved by two men, but those relationships do not go well. At first, one man is Philip. He is kind person, so Maggie and him fall in love each other. However, their fathers are rival relationship, so they cannot get married and they are not allowed to meet freely at the same time. The other person's name is Stephan. Although Maggie loves him, he is a boyfriend of her precious cousin. That is why, she gives up loving him.      After those her romance experiences, Maggie decides to live by herself without getting married with anyone. 8. The house on the hill

     I read the book named "The house on the hill". It is a love story but a little sad in the end. There are two main characters in this book. One person is Paul who is a poor boy living in a little brown house. The other person is Maria who is a rich girl living in a big white house on the hill.      One day, when Paul walked along the river, he met Marie. She was very beautiful, so he fall in love her and talked with her. As time passed, they were close to each other and at last they desided to get married. However, one problem was happened and as a result, Paul must leave Marie. He could not give up her, so he tried to become a writer and be in rich. After some years later, he fullfilled his long-held desire, but Marie's personality was differrent from the past...      If you read this book, you will be surprised at the ending and you can also think about the importance of considering about people's personality.
