Do you know Edgar Allan Poe? Most students may know his name because we studied about him at American literature class last year. This time I introduce a book called ‘Tales of Mystery and Imagination’.
The book is written about darkness of people’s mind, madness, fears, and so on. It also consists of five stories and most of characters of it are out of their way. You can read ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ which is one of the most famous stories of his work. However, the work I am interested in this time was ‘ The Black Cat’. As the name of the title, a black cat appears in the book but it also cause some bad events. A man who loves animals is the main character. He always had many animals as pets and especially among them, he loved a black cat called Pluto. They have always been together and the man was more friendly and honest person at that time. However, after he married a woman, his personality gradually changed because of alcohol. As a result, he gave some violences not only to his wife, but also to his pets. Pluto also suffer from his violence and one day, the man killed the cat he loved the best. It was the begging of his mad life.
This book is in the Oxford Bookworms series. Most stories existing in this book are a little long, but you can enjoy a large part of Edgar Allan Poe’s work if you read the book. Some people may feel that it is a little scary when you read it at night. In my opinion, I recommend you try it at late night to enjoy the atmosphere of these stories.
